Who can sign up for meals?
Recipients must be homebound and incapacitated residents of Greenville County, SC who cannot prepare their own hot meals, and have no one else to provide for them. Meals are available without regard to age, income, race, religion, national origin, sex or handicap.
How long can you receive meals?
Meals can be short term (2-3 weeks) or long term (as long as you qualify).
Do you charge for the meals?
We do not charge for the meals we deliver. We rely on grants and contributions to pay for the meals that we send to the recipients.
What diets are available?
We provide regular, diabetic, renal and vegetarian meals. These meals can be provided as chopped or pureed meals when needed. In addition to the hot lunch meal, frozen evening and/or weekend meals are available to those who qualify and have no assistance during that time. Emergency meals may be sent out occasionally due to inclement weather.
Do you have a pet food program?
We provide cat and dog food on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month for up to two pets.
What other resources are available?
The Client Care Manager at Meals on Wheels provides in-home assessments to the clients and assesses the needs for additional resources.
What referrals are available for other needs?
Referrals are made to available community resources and agencies based on need and eligibility. Referrals are also made to the Faith Community Nurse for health assessments and needs. Meals on Wheels provides clients with a wide variety of written literature to clients throughout the year.
Will Meals on Wheels make home visits?
Meals on Wheels volunteers deliver weekday meals between 10 AM and 2 PM. Meals are not delivered on weekends. If meals are needed for weekends, frozen meals are sent on Friday. Our Client Care Manager, and our Faith Community Nurse, make home visits during the week, during normal business hours.
How does Meals on Wheels communicate with clients?
We communicate with clients by telephone, e-mail, in person, by letters, and with our newsletters. We believe communication is important and also the privacy of that communication.
Does Meals on Wheels ask for driver’s license numbers, Social Security numbers or bank information?
We will not request this information. We will need basic information, such as the address, telephone number, birth date, emergency contacts and general information to qualify the clients, i.e. driving status.
